Volendam is famous for its harbour, traditional costumes and fish shops. Marken is a former island with unique green wooden houses on stilts. The Marken Express ferry runs regularly between the two villages — an experience in itself.
By car: 20-25 minutes to Volendam. By bike: approx. 45 minutes via Waterland (a beautiful route). By public transport: bus towards Edam/Volendam. Tip: combine Volendam and Marken with the ferry in between.
Combine Volendam and Marken in one day using the ferry. Go on a weekday for fewer crowds. Try the herring at the harbour. Marken is smaller and quieter than Volendam. Take your bike for the most scenic route through Waterland.
