The Zaanse Schans is one of the most famous places in the Netherlands. Working windmills, wooden houses, cheese makers and clog makers in a beautiful setting along the Zaan river. The site is freely accessible.
Visitors stroll past historic wooden houses, working windmills and traditional crafts. It feels like an open-air museum, but the village is genuine. Ideal for a half or full day out.

By car: 20-25 minutes. By public transport: bus to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station (approx. 30 min). By bike: approx. 45 minutes via a scenic route through the Zaanstreek. Tip: go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a quieter experience.

Access to the site is free. Some mills and museums charge admission. Go early or late for the best photos. Combine with a visit to Zaandam city centre. Parking is paid.
